Seascape 1
I created this stunning and vibrant seascape in batik by drawing inspiration from the dramatic coastline of the Isle of Anglesey.
To begin, I sketched a flowing composition directly onto the fabric, focusing on bold, sweeping lines to echo the rhythm of the waves.
Using hot wax, brushes and tjanting tools I varied the thickness of the wax lines to suggest depth and motion. The crackle effect, formed as the wax cooled and gently fractured, became an important feature. The wax and dyes are allowed to flow onto the canvas echoing the movement of the sea and creating an organic growth throughout the process. Between each layer, I allowed areas of colour to bleed softly into one another, mimicking the constant blending and churning of water.
To capture the power of the sea, I used bold contrasts—dark, saturated tones against bright highlights. The final removal of the wax revealed striking lines and preserved whites that suggested crashing foam and explosive movement.
The finished batik seascape feels alive with energy.
